A Season Suspended

There’s a bit of magic that often happens at this time of year in this region. A kind of suspension of seasons. We’ve already had our first hard frosts and even a snow flurry, but now…now is simply golden. Even as the leaves drop from the trees in a veritable shower, the crickets still sing along the river, clusters of asters bloom in shades of pink, purple, and white, and the sun encourages you to shed your coat…just as in Aesop’s fable.

A walk on a day like this is to be treasured, its memory closely guarded so that it may be brought out and dusted off during the cold, bleak days of winter that we cannot avoid.  A promise that life still exists under the icy crust.

Don’t you just wish it could go on, and on? It’s over too quickly.
